Description / Echinacea 'White Swan' Coneflower
Echinacea 'White Swan' Coneflower is an upright perennial with large, honey scented, pure white flowers from early to late summer. The petals reflex gracefully away from a coppery brown, spiky central cone, creating a classic coneflower look in crisp white. Plants reach 24 to 36 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide.
'White Swan' fits beautifully in beds and borders, prairies and meadows, wildflower and cottage gardens, containers, and small gardens. The blooms are excellent as cut and dried flowers. Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds visit the flowers, and blackened cones left standing in fall provide food for birds. Pair it with Kniphofia, Eryngium planum, Rudbeckia fulgida, and Achillea for a lively summer display. Coneflowers are native to the central and eastern U.S. and have been grown as hardy, showy perennials since the 1700s.
Grow in full sun in average, well drained chalk, loam, or sand with an acid, neutral, or alkaline pH; it also tolerates clay, rocky, dry, and poor soil. Water needs are low to average. Hardy in Zones 3 to 8, it is deer resistant, low maintenance, and tolerant of drought, heat, humidity, and salt. Remove spent flowers and cut back stems to encourage more blooms. Fragrant white flowers and tough, adaptable performance set 'White Swan' apart.
